Peter SzyperskiSan Rafael, California, July 14, 2017 –– Katie MacCallum has joined the NewGen Surgical team for the summer while she works on her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Currently a senior, Katie has worked with engineering teams at CalPoly to create a functional knee brace and a mathematical model of knee joint reaction forces.

Katie will work closely with Vice President of Engineering and Operations, Ken Blier, and Senior Operations Manager, Peter Szyperski. As an Engineering Intern, she will assist in the mechanical evaluation of new and existing products, as well as provide support with the development of new experiments and methods of testing product. Additionally, she will evaluate test data and prepare test report drafts, and collaborates in the development of test protocol.

“As we continue developing sustainably designed products for the O.R., we are excited for Katie to join our team this summer. She will collaborate with NewGen Surgical engineers to improve and rethink how single-use medical devices and surgical products are designed. Katie worked with a group of six engineering students at Santa Rosa Junior College to create a prosthetic arm for a trans-radial amputee within a $40 budget. She is innovative while being methodical, and we are really looking forward to having her on our team this summer,” said Robert Chase, Founder and President.
