Being an environmental steward begins with our mission to provide the healthcare industry with sustainable products to minimize the negative ecological impact of delivering patient care. All of us at NewGen Surgical believe it is our responsibility to put our collective skills and experiences to work to find solutions for climate change, use of non-renewable natural resources, waste, and plastic production and pollution on behalf of those who are responsible for human health.
Much like the healthcare industry’s emphasis on wellness and prevention for optimal health, NewGen Surgical is doing the same for planetary health. The U.S. EPA states the most environmentally and cost-effective approach to waste is source reduction and reuse. Source reduction, also referred to as pollution prevention, means any practice that reduces or eliminates waste at the source. By reimaging and redesigning single-use disposable plastic products used every day through a sustainability lens, we can create products that both deliver clinical performance and reduce plastic production, disposal, and associated pollution.
Our plant-based medical devices and products:
- Supports the use of sustainable, upcycled, and renewable materials
- Reduces chemicals of concern
- Reduces Scope 3 emissions
- Reduces the use and dependence on fossil fuels
- Reduces the volume of plastic waste
Our Smart Sustainable Design™ is applied throughout the product life cycle to include raw materials, manufacturing, supply chain, packaging, and disposal.
Raw materials – Plant-based products are made with a post-agricultural by-product from a renewable source creating an upcycled feedstock.
Raw materials - All materials considered for a NewGen Surgical product are vetted against the green chemistry policy to be compliant with California Prop 65 and our own “do not use” list.
Manufacturing – Contract manufactures are ISO 14000 certified and conduct their operations according to the standard to minimize their impacts on the environment.
Packaging – From unit to shipping, all products are packaged with recyclable materials.
Hospital - NewGen Surgical products have a direct and measurable impact in reducing plastic waste and Scope 3 CO2e emissions from healthcare for greener operations.
Disposal - Plant-based material can biodegrade, rate dependent on disposal conditions.
Although our focus is on surgical products, our customers were also seeking solutions for their packaging waste. Millions of polystyrene foam trays are used for additional stability in procedure kits for assembly and distribution. Polystyrene foam is unable to be recycled and banned in some municipalities, and surgical teams were disheartened by the amount of clean – but hazardous - packaging they were adding to the landfill. Meeting a need of our customers and the greater industry, NewGen Surgical created the Product Kit Packaging Tray product line offering improved durability and strength when compared to polystyrene foam, a ridged surface for easier gathering of products, and the plant-based trays can be recycled with paper meeting zero waste goals.
Responsible Consumption and Production
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are a blueprint achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. NewGen Surgical’s Smart Sustainable Design aligns with SDG #12 – Responsible Consumption and Production. This goal is about doing more and better with less, and decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation, increasing resource efficiency, and promoting sustainable lifestyles.
SDG #12 is a continuous loop of producer and consumer feedback, and producers go where the money flows. Hospitals with environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) policies use their sustainable procurement dollars to send a signal to the market to increase production on environmentally friendly products and services.
NewGen Surgical’s is committed to redesigning single-use plastic disposables that will:
- Eliminate chemicals of concern and toxicity
- Reduce energy and use of nonrenewable resources
- Reduce the amount of plastic produced, used, and discarded
- Reduce plastic waste going to landfill or incineration
And our growing customer list proves hospitals recognize the relationship of patient health and their community. Healthcare organizations are using their purchasing power to proactively opt for products and services that promote environmental sustainability and improved quality of life.

People: Enhancing the health of communities in which we operate - patients, surgical staff, sustainability leaders, procurement, and healthcare stakeholders - all people effected by the environmental effects of plastic production and pollution.
Planet: Aiding and protecting our environment - it is our mission and our passion. We want to leave the world a better place for future generations.
Profit: By doing good we can also do well, financially. Companies need profitability to be commercially sustainable, but not at the expense of others or degradation of the environment.
Purpose: Putting our mission squarely in the center of everything we do results in a reduction of fossil fuel use and its damaging ecological impacts and supports the innovation and pioneers of sustainable materials.
Our success will be measured in context of how well we do in all areas Profitability, People, Planet, and Purpose.
