AORN attendees embrace action with NewGen Surgical at the Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2018

 by Rob Chase

NewGen Surgical exhibited for the first time at AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2018 in New Orleans and we had a remarkable time. In addition to having a steady flow of nurses and other healthcare professionals stopping by our booth, we were pleased to meet the many perioperative nurses who heard about our products from another. It’s exciting to receive referrals from other attendees and a great testament to healthcare ready to embrace greener operations with the use of sustainably designed products.

We heard great feedback, like “Thank you for the work you are doing” and “There is just too much waste in the O.R. and we need to do something about it”. It is incredibly encouraging to hear these words and know that the healthcare industry is demonstrating a much greater commitment to sustainability and healthy environments. Greener solutions for the O.R. – like the products from NewGen Surgical – are good for business, good for communities, and good for environmental health.

I embraced action in 2012 when I founded NewGen Surgical to address the plastic waste coming from single-use disposables from the O.R. Since then, having worked with many healthcare professionals in all areas of the hospital system, I have found one thing is true: Action can come from one person.

A champion for sustainability is the person on the front line, such as a nurse and healthcare professionals we met at the conference, who will advocate greener products for the O.R.  Committed individuals will raise awareness of new, sustainable options for medical devices and products, and challenge the status quo. Simply put, one person can embrace the action to make a healthier place for all of us. We found this to be evident every day at the AORN conference – the nursing professionals excited about sustainability are driven to do something about it.

At AORN 2018, samples of our new plant-based needle counter were available for a hands-on experience, and our new environmentally preferable purchasing program, Small Change Big Impact EPP, was showcased.

We went to the show to inspire and came away inspired ourselves. Thank you to the AORN community.
