NewGen Surgical Becomes a Sponsor of Practice Greenhealth’s Greening the OR® Initiative

Sustainably designed medical device company supports sustainability in the operating room

gor-featured-image(Reston, Virginia) — Practice Greenhealth announced that NewGen Surgical has signed on as a supporter of one of the non-profit’s major initiatives focused on greening the operating room. NewGen Surgical, a leader in developing high-quality, single-use devices from today’s most sustainable materials, is the latest business to join the Greening the OR® Initiative. The Smart Sustainable DesignTM approach helps hospitals minimize their environmental footprint and still offer exceptional clinical performance. By focusing on the materials surgical products are made with, the health care sector is using less energy and plastic while reducing toxic waste.

“Our mission is to offer sustainable alternatives to plastic single-use products.” said Rob Chase, founder and CEO of NewGen Surgical. “Supporting Practice Greenhealth’s Greening the OR® Initiative not only fits in with our stewardship goals which are to support initiatives that focus on environmental impacts and the healthcare system, but will also put us in the same company of like-minded professionals. Working together we can make a meaningful difference towards a greener O.R.”

Hospitals are energy and resource intensive, and operating rooms are the largest users of that energy. They are also a major consumer of resources, using as much as 56 percent of a hospital’s total budget. In addition, operating rooms produce a disproportional amount of waste — between 20 and 30 percent of a hospital’s total waste volume. To help hospitals run more efficient and environmentally-friendly operating rooms, Practice Greenhealth introduced the Greening the OR® Initiative to look at interventions in the OR that reduce environmental impact, reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve worker and patient safety.

“We are thrilled to welcome NewGen Surgical to the growing numbers of sponsors of this important Initiative,” said Bob Jarboe, Executive Vice President of Business Development, Practice Greenhealth. “Change will not be effected in the health care sector without a broad coalition of manufacturers, suppliers and health care providers who are working together to create a greener future for our nation’s hospitals.”

NewGen Surgical joins a large number of participating hospitals, health care companies, for-profit companies, and group purchasing organizations that are working to implement large scale green efforts to reduce waste, trim water and energy use, and create markets for EPP products.
